Music Business 101: Effective Ways to Promote on Myspace

MySpace has become a fantastic way to promote music online or it is one of the effective ways to promote you or your band online. Every artist or group needs a MySpace account now and if you haven't already got one I urge you to sign up now and start promoting. But before you do, I want to explain what is effective and what is not so you can use your time wisely, because trust me, you can spend a lot of (addictive) time there or on the internet in general.

The first thing you need to do is look for ways you can stand out from the herd. It seems like every Tom Dick or Harry has a MySpace page so it is important to do something a little different. Having said that, the coding boys at MySpace have not made it particularly easy to do that, (it's a free service after all) and hence the slew of external companies offering free MySpace layouts. To find a layout you like, simply do a Google search for "Myspace layouts" and you will find a good deal to choose from. One I particularly like is www.freecodesource.com or http://www.pimpmyprofile.com. When you find a layout you like, you will get some code to insert in your profile field. It's quite a simple process.

There are way too many artists spending too much time promoting their MySpace pages when their own band domains are being ignored. You should know, and expect, that MySpace may very well be out of business in a few years. Most of these big sites come and go, especially when there are millions of dollars involved. On the other hand, the company may thrive, who knows. Frankly, I'm not prepared to put all my eggs in someone else's basket. So here's something you should take on board: Use MySpace to drive traffic to YOUR website and seduce them into subscribing to your opt-in newsletter. If you are smart you could even place an opt-in form right on your MySpace page. You can sign up for one or use your Reverbnation widget or create your own one at Google Forms. There is also another one, but I will get into that at another time. MySpace utilizes HTML so it's quite easy to place code in your page calling files from external sites. You can see how I've placed a form on my own MySpace page here (and do feel free to send me a note or comment). Once you have fans subscribed to your newsletter (preferably by location) you can send them discount offers to buy your CDs and tell them where you are performing. This, and a riveting and fascinating monthly newsletter will stand you way ahead of the pack I assure you.

Make your MySpace page personal. Talk to your fans and post comments on their pages too. If you care about them, they will care about you. Take time to add some interesting personal info about yourself, or the entire band if appropriate. Include some great photos, both professional and candid, and of course allow fans to download an mp3 or two of your music.

So let's now talk about grabbing new fans from MySpace. What I suggest you do is accept pretty much all those who request to be your friend, within reason. But I would advise you not to go seeking friend adds from other bands. The reason is that other bands have absolutely no interest whatsoever in your music, for the most part. They have their own agendas. Unless you want to discuss joint ventures with them I suggest you don't go after bands but go after those bands' fans instead! To do this, find bands that are on the same musical frequency with you. More importantly, ask yourself, "What bands' fans out there would also dig MY music". When you come across a particular band you like, scroll down to the comments section. These are the folks you want to get to most of all. Those folks adding comments are the most active MySpace users and are listening to artists' music. So go to their pages and send them an email introducing yourself, along with a friend add. Do not simply spend hours adding blind friend requests to all and sundry. Target your fans and seduce them into your lair.

Finally, it can seem overwhelming and somewhat daunting when you see some stars with just millions of friends and Plays today: 10,000, but wouldn't it be nice to get there? My advice is to take your time but dedicate an hour or so every day to do this.

I can't reiterate enough the need to get your new potential fans to come visit your own website. If they haven't subscribed to your newsletter at your MySpace page, then make it really easy for them to do this at your own domain when they come and visit. Give them incentives to subscribe, free stuff, but also stuff they would want. I have found that free music isn't always enough now. Utilize youtube.com now and make little videos that fans can see when they subscribe. Video cameras are not expensive anymore so investing in one and uploading edited versions to youtube (then copying the 'share-it' code to your website) could be extremely effective in helping to market your music.

The Internet has enabled so much for the indie artist. These are exciting times for us. No excuses now. Go promote yourself! Until next time and remember that we have another year to work our asses off. Soe begin aan die wiel spring!

Production & Technical Tips: The Recording Environment Part 3

Recording Vocals

We are almost done with our recording environment tips. If you missed the previous two parts then I do urge you to go and check it out!

Now you’re finally ready to start recording the vocals. We would suggest not using much compression (if any) at the recording stages, and definitely no EQ. Recording the sound with no processing allows more flexibility and control at the mix stage. Experienced engineers may use certain types of processing at the recordings stage, but this is risky. What might sound great when isolated might sound terrible in the mix and frequency spectrum.
For this reason I would suggest recording with no effects or processing. A tiny bit of compression can work well, but make sure not to overdo it. You can always add more at the mixing stage!
When recording vocals it’s important to help the rapper/ singer achieve the best performance. For starters, setting up a good headphone mix can make things much easier for yourself and the rapper/ singer. The headphone mix must be well balanced, giving the singer a small amount of reverb or delay. It’s also a good idea to do a few test recordings and find out what headphone mix the rapper/ singer likes. They may want to be smothered in reverb if that helps make them confident. As we mentioned earlier you don’t want any processing on the vocals during recording, so even though you’re giving the singer reverb, make sure it’s not on the recording. Simply add the effects and processing on the output of your channel as you send it to the microphone amp for the singer. You’ll want the flexibility to add different reverbs and see what sounds good later on. You always want as much freedom as possible at the mixing stage.
Be Friendly
Your attitude as a producer / engineer can also be the deciding factor in the rapper/ singer delivering a good vocal performance. Try to be encouraging rather than critical about their performance. It’s usually a good idea to get the rapper/ singer to sit in with you after recording a few vocal takes and let them listen to what they've recorded. They are usually their own best critics, so if they can assess problems themselves then it makes your job a lot easier. Usually they’ll ask if they can do another take or correct a line in the song. If a rapper/ singer is constantly not delivering a good performance then don’t keep them in the booth until they get it right. Give them a short 10 - 15 minute break. This can work wonders. Remember, the best tool in having your singer give the best performance is confidence. Make them comfortable and let them adjust without telling them constantly what they’re doing wrong.
Spoiling them with green tea and honey can also help to make them more comfortable. Lol. I know this might sound crazy but it really works for the rapper/ singers. A rapper/ singer needs lots of fluids to keep their mouth and throat moist so avoid alcohol, which will just dehydrate them. Water is the best drink.
Part4:
Mixing & Processing Vocals:
Once everything is recorded and you've compiled your favorite takes to create the master and cleaned up any unwanted noise and breath effects in the gaps, you can use a variety of processing and mixing effects to touch up the vocals to get the final polished sound.
EQ
When it comes to EQ there’s nothing set in stone. Although following the list below will help you start to clean up the sound:
  • Removing some of the 150-450Hz ranges will remove some low-mid range boxiness.
  • Boosting Frequencies around 8 kHz + can add a nice airy tone, and crisp effect to the sound. However, watch out for the ‘S’s and ‘T’s as any brightening will inevitably boost these.
  • When using EQ make sure to boost and cut as little as you can get away with. Drastically changing the sound with EQ will give an un-natural sound to the performance.
Compression
This is my favourite part of processing vocals. A compressor works in 2 ways. Firstly the main purpose of a compressor is to even out the peaks and dips in the recording. By squeezing the volume of the recording a compressor will make the loudest parts of a recording sound closer in volume to the quietist parts. This gives a smooth, even volume and is kind on your ears.
The second and more important aspect of compression is the musical energy that it gives to a recording. When used correctly compression adds an immediate pressure and energy to very dynamic recordings that can really bring a vocal take to life. Listen to a radio DJ and you’ll be able to hear the compression pumping away to keep the volume of the voice on an even level. Radio compression is excessive so as to protect people’s hi-fi speakers so I’m not suggesting you use such drastic settings but experiment and you’ll soon discover that compression is the most important tool in processing of vocal recordings.
Aiming for about 6-9dB of gain reduction, using a ratio of between 2:1 and 7:1 on the loudest parts in the track should give you a good starting point. Make sure when setting the attack and release time you get an even sounding reduction. It’s important not to get that ‘breathing’ effect. You don’t want to hear the compressor working; you just want the vocals to sound even.
Reverb
Reverb is really all about personal taste. While some engineers and singers use the smallest amount possible, others will use as much as they can get away with. A plate emulation is usually the common setting used when mixing urban vocals. Plate emulations are good and often serve to settle the vocal into the mix. Try these settings on your vocal sound.
  • Plate Reverb
  • 2.3 Seconds Length
  • High pass Filter
  • 0.24 Seconds Attack Time
  • 2.10 Seconds Decay Time
  • 6 ms Pre-Delay
  • -44dB Reverb Volume
  • 2.4dB Wet Reverb

Artist Review: 3 Amazing Musicians – 3-A.M

3 Amazing Musicians is a new rap trio that emerged from Paarl Valley and started their musical ventures at the beginning of February 2010. At that time the trio was not so serious in pursuing this career but after their first gig, was the rest history. The group members are from New Orleans and Charleston Hill and consist out of Miles Benjamin a.k.a. MOB (producer/ rapper), Cheslin Boisen a.k.a. C.B. and Almero Adams a.k.a. Ally G (producer). The crew made their debut at Miss New Orleans Secondary in February of 2010 and their last appearance was at Club Havana in Wellington at Panaikz C.D. launch. They jotted down over 50 names for the crew and asked their friends and fans what name to use and eventually ended with 3-A.M. They call their music soul music and not hip hop/ rap since they feel it from their soul. “We do not classify ourselves,” said M.O.B. 3-A.M is currently in the studio finishing up their debut mixtape and recorded 8 trax so far and hopefully will complete it by March 2011. They collaborated with Justine and Ube. They are of course faced with challenges since artists do not pitch up to record, but we will see how things unfold in 2011. They also hope to perform on a promotional event with a well- known beverage company. Unfortuanately can we not disclose any names. NO FREE advertising. LOL. Their songs are based on everyday struggles and issues that everyone faces. They also do not write songs based on themselves but what happens to other people in the community. They have a chilled creative process and this helps them to write their commercial hits. Fans can expect the best and not a Souljah Boy fly by crew as said by M.O.B.. Quality content and productions is what they aspire to. When I asked M.O.B. what he wants to tell the youth he said:” Believe in yourself and do not let anyone tell you otherwise. I started with nothing and got helped from guys like Yunique, Panaikz and many others. So just believe in yourself!” Fans can expect them to perform next year in February 2011 at a charity event in Cape Town. If you want to listen to their music then go to http://www.soundcloud.com/milesmob or http://www.reverbnation.com/milesmob.

Music Business 101 - Keep your fans coming for more

Nowadays almost every artist sees the importance of having an online presence. Just think of how much time you’ve spent making sure that your website or social network page looks great and professional… after all that effort; you might probably start scratching your head because you don’t know what to do next. In this piece, we will look at just some of the things you can use to keep your fans visiting your page all the time.

When it comes to an online presence, the principle is pretty much the same – content is king. Maintaining your website or social network page is a crucial factor that often goes unnoticed and ignored. Let’s get this straight, updating your social network page status is not enough, you need more than that. Honestly, what’s the use of visiting someone’s page regularly if there is nothing new?

What I am getting into here is that you need to forget about how cool your site or page looks and for a moment think about the strategy you can use to ensure that your fans keep coming back for more. To keep your online presence vibrant, you need interesting content.

Just think of how great it would be if your cool website and social networking presence has a professional appearance, regular news, accessible music samples with cool photos taken from the events or in a studio recording. This is an example of strong content.

What I have realized in the past is that people will only visit your site or social network page if there is something new to see. Some of this content is simple to generate; just think how easy it is to take photos while performing? Why don’t you put those photos up for your fans to see? You don’t have to write like a professional journalist or writer to put together an interesting news piece – what matters is delivering the point home.

Then it comes down to music, music and more music! Your fans are waiting to hear what you have been working on and there are so many free platforms you can host your music for free such as Soundcloud, Ilike and Reverbnation.

And once you have some strong content up, you need to make sure you keep updating it. Add more news about upcoming events. Upload new photos from the events. And keep making music for your fans to listen to and in some cases download for free.

The truth of the matter is that you need to be constantly feeding your website or social network pages with interesting content. You need to make sure that for those who are not visiting for the first time, there is something for them to digest.

Many artists or music makers loose their online fans because they create amazing websites and social network pages but fail to keep them fresh. I am not saying that you need to be updating your page with new photos and music each day, once a week is fine. Just don’t let things get stale.

All I am saying here is that, it does not help to create a great site and have professional social network platforms if you will not put an effort into making those platforms do what they are supposed to do. Ultimately, this will help you keep your fans updated and also encourage them to keep visiting. If indeed you see yourself as a brand, then you need to start taking your website and social network pages seriously. We are your fans and we want to know the latest developments in your career.

Step up ya Game! Production and Technical Tips

Welcome to part 2 of our series of production tips & tricks. Last time did we discuss about choosing the right microphone, polar patterns and then also the buyers tip. Today are we going to cover mic pre- amps, acoustic problems, acoustic treatments, shock mount and pop filter. One thing that is always overlooked by serious producers in the P. So here’s a headz up

Mic Pre-amps

The answer is No you don't NEED them, but it would be nice to use the best Mic-pre's you can get your hands on. My microphone pre-amp of choice is the Focusrite Liquid Channel which engineers use on pretty much everything they record.

Acoustic Problems And Treatments:

Unless professional acoustic designers have professionally designed your studio there will be reflections from lots of different sources in your recording room. If you do not understand what I am talking about then just hit me up and I will cover another issue about Acoustic reflections and how to counter them without breaking the bank.
Why is this a big problem?
Well, if you get the sound you’re after you will still have the reverb and reflections from the room layered over the vocal take. So when adding a nice reverb sound in the mix, you’ll essentially be adding reverb to an already reverberated signal. This is a huge problem in the typical home studio.
Home studios have lots of unwanted room reflections and prevent you from achieving a professional sound. Overlooking acoustic treatment is a big mistake. You could spend thousands on a great selection of microphones and equipment, but without a correctly treated recording booth / room you’ll have problems at the mixing stage.
This is an example of an acoustic treated control room.

As you can see above the mixer is sonic tiles and as well at your left hand side and front of the mixer is also. Sonic tiles can cost you R250 one tile and up. If you can’t afford to do much acoustic treatment, many home studios simply hang a duvet, blanket or curtains behind the microphone and around the singer. This can go a long way and you’ll be able to notice the difference immediately. This will at least stop the ‘boxy’ type of sound you get when not treating the environment. A rug/carpet rather than wood floor will also help tremendously. If you can afford acoustic treatment there are various products available that wont break the bank and will seriously reduce your room reflections. There is a company in Brackenfell that takes care of that. Drop us a line and we will forward you the info!
If you're a lottery winner there are many professional acoustic engineers available to take your money and get your rooms sounding perfect. A quick Internet search will yield many results.

Shock-Mount & Pop Shield:

While a Shock-Mount is not the most important aspect in achieving a great vocal sound, it will stop those annoying low- end vibrations coming up from the floor. Most decent microphones will come with a Shock-Mount.

You’re almost there. Before you can start recording, purchasing a decent Shock-Mount and Pop Shield is vital. Fitting the pop shield a few inches away from the microphone will stop the popping and booming problems you’ll get in the vocal performance. Certain words and sounds, such as ‘P’ will give that effect, using a pop shield eliminates the blasts of air (called ‘Plosives’) hitting the microphones diaphragm. There is also a cheaper form and that is by taking your mom or aunty or sister or granny…lol… or girlfriends pantyhose and wrap it around a wire. Those wired hangers works very well and I will suggest that. Make a circle and a straight line, and then wrap that pantyhose around the circle. That’s it! Now you have a custom-made granny pantyhose popfilter. You also have the option of buying a pro one, which of course gives better results in your recordings, not, that the panty custom one won’t work. It will set you back R150 up until R350 for one.

So that was part 2 of the series of Production Tips. Check out next week for part 3.

Step up ya Game! Production and Technical Tips

Production and Technical Tips, Tricks and the latest gear. If you have any requests then email ém to us. totallyhardcorepv@gmail.com. Step up ya Game homie!

Choosing The Right Microphone:
I know you might think this aint a biggy, but believe it is very much so. A mic is part of your signal chain so make sure that you get the best one or at least a good one. First of all you need to decide if you’re going to use a Small or Large diaphragm microphone. Your choice of microphone for a rapper/ singers particular vocal tone can have a dramatic effect on the final mix. Typically, in today's industry, large diaphragm microphones are the standard. They offer a certain warmth and smoothness but can also lend your rapper/ singer an airy/sizzly tone. Cardioid-Pattern Capacitor Microphones are the most common for any type of Pop or Urban recordings. However some rappers/ singers prefer to use dynamic microphones such as some ‘Shure’ models because it brings out a certain tone in their voice. The Shure SM58 is a great one.
Valve/Tube condenser mic's have also been popular over the years with their added warmth as the valve in the mic gets driven and adds a mild harmonic distortion that is pleasing to the ear.

Although the make and model is important, the tonal characteristics and overall sound is key! This is much more important to the rapper/ singer than a lot of producers and engineers can appreciate. Most rappers/ singers don’t care what microphone patterns, make and model is used, just as long as you can bring out a good sound in their vocals. There is nothing more frustrating to a rapper/ singer than knowing they nailed a perfect take, only to find out the recording doesn't do it justice.

Polar Patterns:

This also ties in with ‘Choosing The Correct Microphone’ section above. It’s important to take the polar patterns of certain microphones in to account when purchasing your next microphone. Cardioid-Pattern Microphones are the industry favorite because they generally exclude most off axis sounds, such as room reflections, spill from other sources and the home studio nightmare of the computer fan / cooler! We would recommend not using an omni-directional pattern microphone unless you have a vocal booth. Omni-directional microphones are equally sensitive all round and will pick up a lot of unwanted sound. If you do have a vocal booth you may find that this type of polar pattern can pick up a more desired vocal sound, or natural ambience. Try testing out different microphones with different polar patterns and compare the recordings and see what you prefer. As long as you have a good ear for music, it’s all about personal taste.
Ribbon microphones are also worth mentioning. As of late, these microphones are showing up in more and more studios. They all have figure-of-eight polar patterns and deliver a very unique and bright sound. Figure of eight polar pattern microphones are equally sensitive to the front as they are the back. In a home studio, putting a sound-absorbing panel behind the microphone can stop any unwanted sound to leak in to the vocal recording.

Buyers Tip:

Last year a friend of mine from the USA was in the market for a new vocal mic for some new recordings for his company Platinumloops so he hired about 8 different condenser mic's of varying qualities and price ranges. By setting them all up on separate mic stands behind a pro quality pop shield he was able to record lots of vocal takes on multiple mic's.

He also rotated the mic positions so that each mic got a fair shot at recording the sweet spot. By doing this he was able to make accurate comparisons of recordings from each mic, which yielded surprising results. Some of the most expensive mic's didn't sound as good as the less expensive mic's. It was also good to try adding compression, eq and de-essing to each track individually to see how much that affected the tone of the mic. He found that some mic's required less processing than others in order to create a transparent, even tone. In the end the mic he eventually purchased was the SE Electronics Z3300A and to this day is his favourite all round vocal mic. Mine of course is one of the bright, shining stars of recording microphones. The Neumann U87. Every recording engineer knows about it, every serious studio owns it, and every other hit on Billboard is recorded with it! It has superb dynamic range and is virtually noise-free (note that in practice it is impossible to have a signal that is 100% noise-free.)
The store where my friend bought the mic, were kind enough to knock off the rental fee when he decided to buy it. I highly recommend you use this approach with your local studio supplier to find the right mic for your voice without wasting money.

Music Business 101

This is a email that I received this morning from my friend and Music Business Coach Mr. Ty Cohen. For those that do not know him, well Ty can assist you in achieving your goals in your music career. Check out this letter because I feel it also play a part in your career.

"Hi Yunique

Today I want to talk to you about something that you may not always
hear from me, but is something that you should learn to incorporate
into your life, right along with your passion for making good music.

And thats the importance of Staying Focused.

When I'm out and about at different music events, no matter
what city or state I'm in people always tell me how "Bad
they want it" ("It" meaning the success, fame, money that
they see their favorite artist or celebrity has)

And what happens, is usually these same individuals are super hype,
motivated and FOCUSED while at the event and even for a few hours
afterward, but most never carry that excitement and focus past the
first day or two.

You see being focused about what you want out of life is not
just something that you should allow to move in and out of your
life so easily. You want to be the KING or QUEEN of being
focused and by that I mean you want to be focused 90% of the
time, because most people will be be at a level half that amount

That means that...

YOU are Focused...
When others are out partying

YOU are Focused...
When others are playing on Twiter, Facebook or
wasting time on gossip blogs

YOU are Focused...
When others are distracted by other things in life

YOU are Focused...
When life is not going as well as you would like it to go
and even when you're dead broke.

YOU are Focused...
Even when life is great, your finances are great, your health is good, etc
(I saw this because belive it or not, when things are really
good... Most people let their focus go right out the window)

Always keep in mind that at any given hour of the day there are thousands and
in some cases many more than that, who want the same thing out of life that
YOU want, but in most cases its the one who is most "Focused" that gets it ;)

Until next time, enjoy life to the fullest!

Ty
Your Music Business Coach!"

Rek Jou Bek!!!!

This section is for people from the PV to raise their opinion and to get heard. You can e-mail us your letters to totallyhardcorepv@gmail.com. We will try to publish all letters. Please note that what is expressed in the letters is not necessarily Totally HardCore’s or our partners views.

Come on!

When are the rappers going to work together? They say that we are unified in the Paarl Valley but the guys or girls will not even come to Mbekweni to collab with us. It is only a few. I only know of PVSI cats, Yunique, Kamalie and Dj. J-EFX that was here. Well I always see G Max, Jah Logo and Yunique frequent our streets. What’s up with the others? They say this is a movement, but I do not see any!

Anonymous from Mbekweni

From Ed: Sup Anonymous. Thank you for your letter. I understand your concern and it is a pity because there is so many talented mc’z, krumpers, singers, etc. in Mbekweni. On the other hand do you have to ask yourself what are you doing to shorten that bridge so that others can come to you. I know of Xhosa Klan, Maker, Virus, Mfanekiso, etc. that is really pushing it to make thangs happen. Of course it is also the stigma that is being portrayed in the media that gives people a certain perception when it is not so.That is where we come in.  We just have to be unified to make this happen.

Yo just wanna say big up to ya’ll! Yt eindelik is it weer terug maar die keur grootter!!!!! TOTALLY HARDCORE ne! Paarl baba!

Ek speak net my mind. As jy n pain vang is it boekant jou. Jy moet dan jou self vra: ”What “kind”?

Jy is eers noticeable as jy ń woelige kar ry of woelige clothing juck. Wat van die mense in ekhasi.

Nou dai is n anne topic, ma it moet addressed word. Terug na die topic van die kolom. Vaal gebou. “Gat kry n werk man!” Hoe? Try os n company start is it oek n procedure. Hulle kyk any way nie vi os nie soe hoekom moet os? Dit is n bad mentality. My broers en susters bly positief. Sien jy seun, Dit is n gangster. Jy is bo hulle.” LMIMP!!! It might funny wies ma dit gebeur.

Ja jy het my gehoor.  KAK AN NIE!!! Soe vaal gebou kry julle ducks in ń row van os is hier. Independent sonne julle geld het os n magazine. LOL! Soe check it. Anders as dit nie soe gan wies nie sal os it hoor in die volgende issue en voluit an vat! P.S.

INSIDE SCOOP: Paarl Rymklets Beweeg Deur Blokke

Ouens soos Jaak, Kamalie, Dokter Kapnoudis, PVSI, Jah Logo, Load, Yunique a.k.a. D.J.

Big Up!

Regtig. Dit is n belewenis!
